Brunei Darussalam and its people enjoyed being one of the world's highest standards of living with oil and natural gas industry dominate the economy which the Sultanates has greatly benefited from more than a century of activity in the energy sector and are fortunate lot with all these blessings. Oil was first produced at scale after the first commercial find in Seria in 1929. Since then, the energy sector has grown to become a core pillar of the wealth for our country. It is paramount that Brunei Darussalam ensures the continued pre-eminence of our energy sector so that it can serve as an engine and catalyst for our economy for the benefit of Bruneians for generations to come. In fact, we will still be depending on our energy sector for years to come. It is therefore important for us to create sustainable growth for this sector through concrete blueprint and systematic strategic approach with concerted efforts by all parties concerned.

All sectors in Brunei Darussalam will have to play their individual and collective roles in growing and diversifying the economy. For energy sector, the Energy Department in the Prime Minister's Office (EDPMO) has set bold targets for the energy sector to realize the sector's full potential that these will require sustained and significant mobilization of efforts. We are working hand in hand with our local, regional and international, private and public partners, to ensure that a welcoming and conducive investment environment continues to persist.

The newly established Energy White Paper has set out a clear framework and landscape for action to enable us to address challenges and to manage the risks. We will work as one with the various Ministries and in partnership with all stakeholders to achieve and fulfill the Wawasan Brunei 2035. I do believe that BNERI's role has been set as one enabler to fulfill these tasks to assure a successful achievement.

For BNERI to serve those purposes, the Institute guided by a team of international advisers made up of prominent experts in the various fields of energy will act as a think tank for the economic growth, security and environment sustainability of Brunei Darussalam and will strive to foster close cooperation and work relationship with other international and regional research Institutes. Last but not least, I am confident that, with BNERI's role as part of our resolute effort, we will take our country's energy sector to new heights in realizing the Wawasan 2035.

We pray to Allah Subahana Wata'ala for His continuous blessing and grant of successes on our efforts to create a better and more sustainable future for our energy industry and Negara Brunei Darussalam as a whole under the benevolent leadership of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam.
